In the finest traditions of early Canadian traders, Angus, Maria and Malcolm McCulloch opened Canadian Rug Traders on Clarence Street in the Byward Market in January 1997. Angus McCulloch has many years experience buying and sourcing textiles from the orient for Harrods of London and as a buyer of oriental rugs for a major British department store group. Angus met his wife Maria while working for Harrods and she is invaluable to the smooth operation and congenial atmosphere of the store. Malcolm McCulloch is a retired commercial pilot and world adventurer who has trekked the Himalayas and climbed Mount Kilamanjaro. As a partner in Canadian Rug Traders his travels continue with frequent buying trips to India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran.

In keeping with the Byward Market's history and ambiance, Canadian Rug Traders is a shop where one is encouraged to browse, ask questions, seek advice and enjoy a pleasant "visit." An ever-changing 'floor show' of handwoven rugs is displayed in a comfortable gallery atmosphere, with products personally selected by Angus, Malcolm and Maria from the major weaving centres of the world where ancient skills produce rugs of heirloom quality and remarkable beauty. The Company motto "All The Mystique, With None Of The Mystery" has been aptly chosen. Customers can expect to learn as much as they care to about the fascinating world of oriental rugs... including just how affordable these beauties really are.
