Qashqa'i - Bownat - Shiraz
These carpets are created by a Persian
tribe of nomads and settled villagers numbering some 400,000 people,
mostly found in
southwest
Iran in Fars province. Most Qashqa'i, of which the Bownat are an Arabic
branch, are still shepherds, which gives them access to a strong, high
quality wool. Their weavings are finer than most other tribal weavers
in Iran and they tend to use more natural vegetable dyestuffs for colouration.
Their wanderings take them through the area where Persepolis is located
- the ancient capital of Persia. The ruins found in this vast archaeological
site are often depicted in the rugs such as the columns with the horse's
heads on, which were the pillars at the gateway to the city. Nomadic
pieces tend to be more geometric than those woven by the settled tribes.
Rare are rugs over 3 x 2 m because they would be too bulky to carry
with them on their nomadic wanderings. Shiraz is the market town from
where we buy all these tribal pieces.
Sizes available include: 6x4, 7x5, 8x5 and 9'9x6'6
Persian Gabbeh
The term Gabbeh does not refer to
a particular tribe of people but rather to the style of weaving worked
by any one of a
number
of different tribes. The actual meaning of the word Gabbeh in
Farsi is "thick"or "unclipped". They are nearly always naive in their
depiction of animals, with backgrounds that reflect the topography of
their transient settlements whether it be a desert, mountain or meadow.
They come in a multitude of colours, such as a green and multicoloured
speckled ground, which would represent a field in spring, full of flowers,
to the berber natural wools that evoke a desert or barren place. Our
latest purchases with the reference suffix 'NTC' are a part of the latest
production to come out of Iran. They are very tightly woven using the
finest of handspun wools in a mixture of natural and synthetic dyes.
These pieces are the highest grade of Gabbeh available and comparable
to the qualities produced for the high end New York wholesalers. We
have had the fringes sewn back for a more contemporary look.
Sizes available include: 4'6x2'3, 5x3, 6x4 and 7x5
Hamadan and mixed Village and
Tribal pieces
The bold angular medallions of the
rugs associated with the Kurdish weavers in Persia as well as with tribes
like the Shahsavan
are
seen in abundance in the examples of village production of the Kolyai
tribe around Sonqur in western Iran, who are the biggest rug producers
amongst the Kurds. The weave is good, the pile dense and the price moderate,
making them very popular with western buyers. These rugs are often classified
as Hamadan from the market town where they are sold in the bazaar.
Sizes available include: 5x3, 6x4, 7x5, 8x5 and 9'9x6'6
